After graduating from Princeton University in 1942 and serving his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Bob Baldwin began a long, successful career at Morgan Stanley. He eventually rose to the top of the firm as president, chairman and chief executive officer, leaving only to serve as Under Secretary of the Navy during the administration of President Johnson.
Bob first met Bill Milliken, a Young Life street worker, in New York. He opened doors for Milliken with the federal government and major corporations. When Cities In Schools was first incorporated in 1977, Bob became its founding chairman, and he continued as chair of the national Communities In Schools board for the next 16 years.
Bob’s involvement with CIS has been a hands-on experience. He personally interviewed all the major hires at CIS and introduced the organization to Morgan Stanley colleague James M. Allwin. Allwin served as a board member, and became the chairman of CIS’ national board of directors in 1995. He still serves in that capacity today.
Bob Baldwin’s legacy to Communities In Schools is enormous. Upon his retirement in 2005, the board voted to name the new national Fellows Program in his honor. It is fitting that the program is named for a man who vision and commitment exemplifies the best in nonprofit leadership. As Bill Milliken said at the time, “Without Bob Baldwin, there would be no CIS.”
